If you're planning a wedding in San Diego, Orange County, LA, or the Temecula Valley, chances are this question has already crossed your mind — probably somewhere between choosing a venue and building your guest list. It's one of the first real numbers you need in order to plan your budget, and yet it's often the hardest one to pin down.

So let's talk about it honestly.

The Quick Answer

In Southern California, wedding photography typically runs anywhere from $1,500 on the low end to $8,000+ for premium, full-service coverage, with most experienced, in-demand photographers falling somewhere in the $2,500–$7,500 range depending on hours, experience, and what's included. There's no single "right" number — but there is a right number for you, and it depends on a few key factors.

What Actually Drives the Price

Every photographer's pricing comes down to a handful of variables. Understanding these will help you compare quotes apples-to-apples instead of just chasing the lowest number.

Hours of coverage. A 6-hour package looks very different from a 10-hour one. More hours means more of your day is documented — from getting ready through your last dance — but it also means more editing time on the back end.

Second shooter or associate. An extra set of eyes means more angles, more candid moments, and better coverage if your ceremony and reception happen in different spots.

Experience and demand. Photographers who are consistently booked out 12–18 months in advance typically charge more — not because of ego, but because their time is genuinely scarce, and their editing style and reliability are proven.

Editing style and turnaround time. A true-to-color, editorial finish takes real time and skill to execute consistently across hundreds of images. Faster turnaround also tends to come at a premium.

What's included. Engagement sessions, film rolls, albums, prints, and digital galleries can all be bundled in or sold separately — this is often where two similarly priced packages end up looking very different.

Travel. Local Temecula, San Diego, or OC weddings cost less to cover than a destination wedding in Napa or beyond, simply because of travel logistics.

General Price Tiers in Southern California (2026)

To give you a realistic sense of the market, here's how pricing generally breaks down right now:

  • Newer or portfolio-building photographers: roughly $1,500–$2,500. Often 6 hours of coverage, a smaller final gallery, and longer turnaround. Many are genuinely talented — you're just taking on a bit more risk around consistency and experience.

  • Established, experienced photographers: roughly $2,500–$4,500. This is where most seasoned Southern California photographers live — typically 8–10 hours of coverage, a full gallery of 500–800 edited images, a consistent editing style, and clear delivery timelines.

  • In-demand, premium photographers: roughly $4,500–$7,500+. Often includes a second shooter, may be hybrid by shooting film and digital, and sometimes bundled albums or video.

  • Luxury, full-service studios: $8,000 and up. Multi-event coverage, top-tier editorial editing, and premium physical products.

Keep in mind: these are general ranges, not hard rules. A photographer's specific pricing depends on their experience, style, and what's included — which is exactly why I always recommend hopping on a call with a photographer rather than comparing numbers on a screen.

Why the Cheapest Option Can End Up Costing More

I get it — wedding budgets add up fast, and it's tempting to look for savings wherever you can. But photography is one of the only parts of your wedding day that outlasts the day itself. The flowers fade, the cake gets eaten, but your photos are what you'll actually hold onto in 20, 30, 50 years.

A lower price often means fewer hours of coverage, a smaller final gallery, less experience handling the unpredictable moments of a wedding day (bad light, tight timelines, big families), and sometimes no backup gear or insurance if something goes wrong. That doesn't mean budget photographers can't do beautiful work — many are wonderfully talented and building something special. It just means it's worth understanding why a price is what it is before you book.

Questions Worth Asking Before You Book

  • How many hours of coverage are included, and what happens if we need more?

  • How many images will we receive, and how are they edited?

  • What's your turnaround time for the full gallery?

  • Do you carry backup equipment and liability insurance?

  • What happens if you're unable to shoot our wedding for any reason?

A photographer who answers these clearly and confidently is usually one you can trust with a day you don't get to redo.

How I Approach Pricing

My philosophy has always been simple: your wedding day should be documented with the same care and intentionality you put into planning it. I believe in true-to-color, editorial photography that feels timeless rather than trendy — the kind of images that still feel like you twenty years from

now.

I keep my starting pricing transparent because I think couples deserve to know where they stand from the beginning. Check out my investment page here. From there, every couple's day is different, so I put together a custom pricing guide based on your venue, timeline, and vision, rather than a one-size-fits-all package.

If you'd like to see my full pricing guide, I'd love to hop on a quick call and talk through your day — no pressure, just an honest conversation about what coverage makes sense for you.
