Picking a wedding venue in San Diego County can feel overwhelming — there are dozens of gorgeous options, and every venue's Instagram makes it look like the one. But after photographing weddings across North County and the greater San Diego area, I've come to know these venues from a completely different angle: not just how they look in a listing photo, but how they actually feel to move through on a wedding day, where the light falls at golden hour, and where the real, candid moments tend to happen.

Here are nine San Diego County venues I've personally photographed weddings at, and what makes each one worth a look.

1. Twin Oaks House & Gardens — San Marcos

Twin Oaks is one of those venues that photographs like a storybook no matter where you point the camera. Set on a restored 1891 estate, the property is layered with rose arbors, waterfalls, and towering trees that create natural, shaded pockets of light — ideal for that soft, romantic look. Couples can choose from several distinct ceremony settings, and the reception unwinds under a tented pavilion strung with chandeliers. It's a full-service, all-inclusive venue, which makes wedding-day logistics easy for everyone involved, including your photographer.


2. Green Gables Estate — San Marcos

Just up the road from Twin Oaks, Green Gables sits at the top of a hillside and catches some of the most beautiful late-afternoon light I've worked with. The whimsical details — a tree swing, an open-air tent, a grand white house at the center of it all — give the property a fairy-tale energy that's a favorite for couples who want something soft and a little magical. The elevated, layered landscape also means I can move through several visually distinct backdrops without ever leaving the property.


3. Jeune Perché — Oceanside

If you're after a European, editorial aesthetic, Jeune Perché delivers it in a way few Southern California venues can. Perched on the edge of the Morro Hills agricultural region, this boutique estate spans rolling hills with sweeping panoramic views and a genuinely private, secluded feel. The French-inspired architecture and furnishings give every frame a quiet elegance — it's a venue that rewards couples with a more refined, fashion-forward vision for their day.


4. Leo Carrillo Ranch — Carlsbad

Built in 1937 by actor and conservationist Leo Carrillo, this 27-acre historic ranch has a rustic warmth that's hard to replicate. Think agave plants, bougainvillea, roaming peacocks, and a hacienda that anchors the whole property. What I love about shooting here is the versatility — the ranch's palette works beautifully whether a couple wants something neutral and chic or bold and colorful. With separate spaces for ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception, the day naturally unfolds in chapters, which makes for a really dynamic gallery.


5. Bluebird Canyon Ranch — Vista

Tucked into the rolling hills of North County, Bluebird Canyon Ranch is genuinely one of a kind — a private estate that blends a French Provence-style manor with an authentic, handcrafted Old West streetscape, complete with saloon doors and vintage storefronts. Add in fragrant lavender fields for golden-hour portraits, and you get a property that offers two completely different visual worlds in one wedding day. Because the owners only open it for a limited number of events each year, it's a rare and memorable choice for couples who want their wedding to feel unlike anyone else's.


6. Tivoli — Fallbrook

Tivoli is my go-to recommendation for couples dreaming of a Tuscan-style wedding without leaving Southern California. Set among old-growth olive and herb groves with sweeping mountain views, the property's stone courtyards, Italian fountains, and sun-drenched terraces make it feel transported straight out of the Italian countryside. The golden hour views over the hillside from Tesoro di Tivoli are some of my favorite in San Diego County to photograph.


7. Grand Tradition Estate & Gardens — Fallbrook

With over 40 years of history and two completely distinct venues on one 30-acre property, Grand Tradition gives couples an unusual amount of choice. The Beverly Mansion offers a lakeside, Victorian-elegance ceremony beside a heart-shaped lake, while Arbor Terrace feels like a private tropical escape with cascading waterfalls. I've photographed weddings in both spaces, and each has its own completely different visual identity — which is part of what makes this estate such a standout.


8. El Prado, Balboa Park — San Diego

For couples who want their wedding photos to double as a love letter to the city itself, it's hard to beat El Prado. The Spanish Colonial Revival architecture, tiled fountains, and lush gardens of Balboa Park give every photo a timeless, editorial quality, and the surrounding museums and gardens offer an almost unlimited range of backdrops within a short walk. It's an especially beautiful choice for couples who grew up in San Diego or want their day to feel rooted in the city's history.
