Planning your engagement session is one of the best ways to kick off your wedding prep! You get to spend intentional time together, be fully present, and celebrate your love in a way that feels fun and meaningful. What’s more special than exploring a beautiful location with the love of your life?
As a San Diego engagement photographer, I’m spoiled with endless backdrops for sessions. From ocean cliffs to city streets to desert adventures, San Diego has it all. Here are some of my favorite engagement photo locations around San Diego to inspire your session.
TORREY PINES
If you love adventure, hiking, and epic views, Torrey Pines is your spot. You can explore the coastal trails for sweeping ocean scenery or wander along the beach beneath rugged cliffs. For couples who can’t choose, doing both during your engagement session makes for an unforgettable mix of photos.
TIP: During the fall and winter the beach gets pretty rocky, bring comfortable shoes you can slip on and off.
WINDANSEA BEACH
Located in La Jolla, Windansea Beach offers the perfect blend of rocky coastline and sandy shore. It’s more secluded than other San Diego beaches and has a laid-back, surfer vibe. With its iconic surf shack and dreamy sunsets, Windansea is a romantic spot for couples who love the ocean but want something a little more intimate.
TIP: Plan your session around low tide. The rocks get more visible giving you unique backdrops.
SUNSET CLIFFS
The name says it all, Sunset Cliffs is famous for its dramatic ocean views and golden hour skies. With unique rock formations and endless coastal backdrops, this is one of the most iconic engagement photo spots in San Diego. If you’re dreaming of breathtaking, glowing sunset portraits, this location delivers every time.
TIP: Arrive early, parking fills up fast especially around sunset.
DOWNTOWN SAN DIEGO
For couples who love an urban, modern feel, Downtown San Diego is a perfect choice. From rooftop views and hotels to colorful murals and city streets, the options are endless. Your session here can feel like a fun date night, wandering the city together and capturing candid, rom-com style moments.
TIP: Schedule your shoot on a weekday evening—the streets are less busy and you’ll have more space to roam.
BALBOA PARK
Balboa Park is a San Diego classic. With Spanish-style architecture, lush gardens, fountains, and hidden arches, it offers a timeless and artsy setting for engagement photos. It’s also packed with history and culture. Bonus points if you explore the museums together after your session.
TIP: Morning sessions are best here. The light is soft and the park is much quieter.
PRESIDIO PARK
If you love the architecture and greenery of Balboa Park but want something more peaceful, Presidio Park is a hidden gem. With quiet pathways, historic white buildings, and views of Mission Valley, it’s like a more intimate version of Balboa. Perfect for couples wanting a romantic but low-key location.
TIP: Bring a picnic or coffee for your shoot—it makes for cute props and a cozy vibe.
LAKE CUYAMACA
For mountain lovers, Lake Cuyamaca is a beautiful escape just outside San Diego. With wide-open views, tall trees, and serene water, it feels cozy and refreshing year-round. It’s especially stunning in the fall and winter months, giving your engagement photos a unique, seasonal vibe.
TIP: Dress in layers. It can get chilly in the evenings compared to the coast. Don't go home without some Julian apple pie!
ANZA BORREGO
Looking for something adventurous and totally different? Anza-Borrego is like San Diego’s mini Grand Canyon. The desert landscapes, spring wildflowers, and vibrant sunsets make for unforgettable engagement photos. And if you stay into the evening, the starry skies are pure magic. It’s a must for couples who love an adventurous session and want photos that stand out.
TIP: Bring plenty of water and plan your session for sunrise or sunset to avoid the midday heat.
Which Engagement Photo Location is Right for You?
The best location is the one that feels like you. If you spend weekends hiking, Torrey Pines or Lake Cuyamaca might be your perfect fit. If you love the beach, Sunset Cliffs or Windansea are dreamy options. For city lovers, Downtown San Diego brings all the urban energy, while Anza-Borrego is ideal for couples who crave something adventurous and off the beaten path.
